Enjoying some time on the water is a big part of life here in the Bay area.

Kayaks, canoes and paddleboards are becoming more and more popular. In fact, according to the Coast Guard, they are the fastest growing segment of recreational boating in the U.S.

Jon Cone owns the Kayak Shack in Weeki Wachee. He says paddle sports really started to take off about four years ago and things are not slowing down.

"I went kayaking and loved it and then got the business and really haven't been kayaking since," he said, laughing.

Coast Guard officials have some advice for staying safe on the water. You should never go out alone and always have a float plan. Also, know your physical limitations and the limitations of your paddlecraft.

Dan Nelson is hooked on kayaking. He got into it a few years ago.

"We had some neighbors that had some for sale and we live right off the river back in Maryland, so we decided to buy them and try it out," he said.

It's a popular way to spend some time on the water that is showing no signs of getting old.
